Our range of MODCAT ferries can carry up to 79 Passengers @ 82.5Kgs pp. We offer a wide range of options, from 9m Single deck up to the 12m Double deck ferries. Each of the MODCAT ferries could be custom modified to suit your needs. Optional equipment can be installed for passenger comfort.

VIEW CASE STUDY

Our Modcat 1200 SD Cargo platform, is a standard build concluded for the following application profile, which is based on an actual build. It is not regarded as exhaustive and is provided as a means of providing prospective clients with a practical case study to work from.


ORIGINAL END USER REQUIREMENTS

We were approached to design and construct an Off Port Limits supply solution requiring the maximum available deck space for cargo transportation and general workboat contracts in Walvis Bay, Namibia.

The client had a very limited budget but already had most of their OEM equipment requirements on site and was well established in the area.

The vessel needed to be capable to carry up to 9 tons of cargo in various sea states on each OPL trip.

The vessels primary operational objective was to transport fresh water and supplies to vessels laying in the anchorage and to transfer and transport garbage back to shore.

Additional functions required was the potential of using the vessel as a work platform for civil work and mooring laying etc.

The client wanted a standard platform that they could fit-out and reduce all applicable manufacturing, labour and associated delivery and registration costs.


SOLUTION PROVIDED:MV DOREY

  • We were able to supply an existing Modcat 1200 design from stock which was in the budget range proposed and provide the following solution to our client.
  • The client did his own assembly, fit out and mounting of motors on site and had safety certification and licensing done in Namibia.
  • MODCAT 1200 SD Standard Cargo HDB Supplied.
  • Propulsion Selected: 2 Pre-owned 100 HP Yamaha 4 Stroke Motors were fitted by the client equipped with dual hydraulic steering.

    CREW CAPACITY

    • The client concluded his own vessel registration and operates as an OPL platform in Namibia.

    SAFETY

    • The client procured and supplied his own safety equipment.

    LOGISTICS SOLUTION

    • The vessel was transported on a single 12-metre flatbed truck directly from our yard in Port Elizabeth to Walvis bay at a minimal standard load tariff.

    SITE ASSEMBLY

    • Client performed their own assembly easily on site.

    COMMISSIONING

    • Client performed their own sea-trials and commissioning program.

    COST BENEFITS

    • The client arranged his own transport, propulsion, safety equipment, painting and assembly of the vessel saving external costs and achieved his desired end result according to a modest budget.
    • They also manufactured their own superstructure and fitted the platform with railings, practical fendering and deck equipment to suit their operation inexpensively.
    • The vessels versatility and immediate availability made the platform perform far better commercially than originally expected.
    • The vessel safely provided a better Payload than anticipated, thus creating a higher income yield per trip.

    ORIGINAL END USER REQUIREMENTS

    We were approached to design and construct a double deck Passenger Ferry capable of carrying the maximum number of paying passengers between Monkey Bay and Mlowe on Lake Malawi within their stringent budget.

    The vessel had to be fabricated in a knock-down format for ease of transport and assembly on site at Chipoka. 

    Fuel efficiency and range was critical due to the distances of travel between the proposed refuelling points.  Vessel to be fitted with full navigation suite, comprising of a VHF Radio, GPS, Echo Sounder, Navigation lights, compass and safety equipment for open water and night operations. 

    Passenger had to be protected from adverse weather by fitting roll-up drop-sides and a roof.

    We had to provide a 220 volt power supply for Fridge, Freezer and lighting.

    The required a stereo sound system. 

    The lack of berthing facilities on the shore required the vessel to be able to beach for passenger embarkation. The vessel was to be able to operate in depths of 0,5 metres of water. 

    Cruising speed between 10 -15 knots, depending on sea conditions.

    Additionally a small rugged tender boat was required to transport crew from ship to shore, when the vessel was on anchor. 


    SOLUTION PROVIDED: MV mvande

    • Modcat Platform Selected: Modcat 1200 DD - Standard Double Deck Passenger Ferry Design
    • The design selected was built directly off existing engineering drawings and was constructed within 2 months.
    • Propulsion Selected: The propulsion consisted 2 x 150 HP Yamaha 4 Stroke Motors and a dual hydraulic steering system.
    • Propulsion fitment and commissioning were done on site by Legacy Marine.

      PASSENGER CAPACITY 

      • The vessel was certified to carry up to 79 Passengers and crew. All seating units were manufactured and supplied by our Yard as requested by the client.
      • Seating arrangements were set out with 49 passengers on the bottom deck and 30 passengers on the upper deck.

      RANGE AND SPEED

      • At sea trials a range of 200 nm with a fuel load of 400 litres @12knots was achieved with a 25% Fuel reserve.

      SAFETY

      • The vessel was equipped with safety and navigation equipment as required to comply with SAMSA - Category D Safety Rules.

      ABLUTIONS

      • The twin toilets were fitted with a 400 lt black water tank. An electrical voiding pump was fitted for the black water removal to a shore based disposal facility. 
      • 100l potable water, with 3 bar fresh water pump supplying the hand basins. 

      LOGISTICS SOLUTION

      • The completed vessel was signed off at our work, disassembled and loaded onto a 13 metre Tri-Axle Link Truck and transported 3000 km by road directly to Chipoka. 
      • The road trip took 48 hours. 

      AVAILABLE SITE FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

      • Offloading and assembly was assisted by the use of a 15 ton mobile crane, which was available on-site. 
      • Electricity and fresh water was also available.
      • a container harbour crane assisted with the launch from the quay side to the water. 

      SITE ASSEMBLY

      • Assembly by a two Legacy Marine Technician plus the vessels crew over a 6 day period.  

      COMMISSIONING

      • As requested by the client, we arranged commissioning and crew training during the maiden voyage from Chipoka to Monkey Bay. 
      • Instrument calibration, range and performance was further tested during the handover voyage running from Monkey Bay to Nkhata.

      PERFORMANCE, FUEL AND RANGE

      • Sea-trail done with full passenger load and fuel
      • Fuel Capacity: 2 x 200 litre built in Fuel tanks
      • Cruising Speed of 12 knots @ 2900 RPM gave a total fuel burn of 18 litres per hour.
      • Range: 200 nm with 25% fuel reserve.
      • Sprint speed: 18 Knots @5000 RPM

      COST BENEFITS

      • Our shipping envelope being a normal roadway load did not require an escort vehicle  associated with abnormal load shipping, thereby substantially reducing total transport time and costs.
      • On-Site Contractor Costs were reduced due to availability of on-site cranage at the launch site 
      • Only 4 days required on site which reduced accommodation and labour costs.
