Our Modcat 900 DD Passenger Ferry platform is a standard build concluded for the following application profile and is based on an actual project build.

It is not regarded as exhaustive, and is provided as a means of providing prospective clients with a practical case study to work from.


ORIGINAL END USER REQUIREMENTS

The client already familiar with our 9 metre Modcat Ferry platform approached us to design and construct a similar double deck passenger vessel to serve as a passenger sunset cruise vessel on the Nile River between Jinja and the Source of the Nile, in Uganda. The vessel would be delivered to the assembly site in a knock-down format for ease of transport. This was due to the access road conditions and available freight options.

The vessel was to be equipped with the maximum number of seats possible and provide a safe platform for passengers and crew with all relevant safety equipment.

Roll-up drop side weather protection for passenger comfort, on-board male and female ablutions and a beverages Bar were requested. 

Containerized shipping was needed for security reasons, border crossing formalities and to maintain a minimalistic logistics footprint into Africa.

High speed was not a requirement.


SOLUTION PROVIDED: MV Source of the Nile

  • Modcat Platform Selected: Modcat 900 DD - Standard DD Passenger Ferry Design
  • The design selected was built directly off existing engineering drawings and was constructed within 2 months.
  • Propulsion Selected: The propulsion consists of 2 x 80 HP Yamaha 4 Stroke Motors and a dual hydraulic steering system.
  • Propulsion fitment and commissioning were done on site by client.

    PASSENGER CAPACITY 

    • The vessel was certified to carry up to 41 Passengers plus 2 crew. Client supplied his own tables and seating.

    RANGE AND SPEED

    • Range and Speed requirements were not relevant 

    SAFETY

    • The vessel was equipped with the necessary safety gear as required to comply with SAMSA - Category R Safety Rules.

    ABLUTIONS

    • The twin toilets were fitted with a 200 lt black water tank. An electrical voiding pump was fitted for the black water removal to a shore based disposal facility. 

    LOGISTICS SOLUTION

    • The entire vessel was signed off at our works and then disassembled and loaded into a 12 m High Cube Container. It was then shipped via Sea Freight from Port Elizabeth to Dar es Salaam. The Container was then transported by road freight to Jinja. 

    SITE ASSEMBLY

    • Assembly by done by the client's marine technician who was involved with the disassembly and container loading at Legacy Marine prior to shipment. 
    • This vessel was later dissembled and migrated further down river in a matter of days, due to the fact that an additional hydroelectric dam wall was built down river from the original area of operation.

    COMMISSIONING

    • Commissioning, Performance trials and Instrument calibration was done by client.

    COST BENEFITS

    • Transportation and freight costs were minimal due to the modularity and containerization of the vessel.
    • On-Site Contractor Costs were zero due to the assembly being completed by the client.
    • Low fuel consumption was achieved by fitting fuel efficient 4-stroke motors.

    Our first MODCAT was the MODCAT 900 Double Deck.


    ORIGINAL END USER REQUIREMENTS

    The client requested a ferry platform to be designed as game viewing passenger vessel to operate on the Nile river in Murchison Falls Game Reserve, Uganda. The vessel would be voyaging from the ferry crossing at Paraa up to Murchison Falls and also down to the Delta at Lake Albert. 


    Due to the size of the vessel and transportation limitations, it had to be designed in a knockdown format to be transported in a 12 metre container. The vessel had to be equipped with sufficient deck space to accommodate a busload of passengers.


    Roll-down weather protection was required for the bottom deck. Top deck to be open as a Sun deck. 


    Assembly and commissioning to be done by Legacy Marine at the launch site on the river bank. 


    SOLUTION PROVIDED: MV Gary Boto

    • Modcat Platform Selected: Modcat 900 Double Deck
    • The Design structure was engineered and stress analysis test were conducted by an engineering team.

      PASSENGER CAPACITY 

      • The vessel was certified to carry up to 40 passengers.
      • Client supplied their own seating.
      • Client fitted his own serving counter. 

      SPEED

      • Speed was not a requirement.

      SAFETY

      • The vessel was equipped for 40 passengers as required to comply with SAMSA - Category R Safety Rules.

      ABLUTIONS

      • Client fitted their own chemical toilet.

      LOGISTICS SOLUTION

      • Vessel was shipped in a container from Port Elizabeth via Mombasa and transported to Entebbe.
      • The vessel was reloaded onto a 10 metre flatbed truck and transported to site at Paraa.

      AVAILABLE SITE FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

      • Offloading and assembly was done manually on the Nile riverbank.
      • Electricity was supplied by a portable generator.

      SITE ASSEMBLY

      • Assembly by a Legacy Marine Technician using local labour took 4 days from start of assembly to launch.

      COMMISSIONING

      • Commissioning, Performance trials, Instrument calibration and crew orientation were achieved while steaming to the Falls and back.

      PERFORMANCE, FUEL AND RANGE

      Speed and Endurance test was conducted with a full passenger and fuel load. Resulting in the following:

      • At a throttle setting of 2400 RPM resulted in a total fuel burn of 14 litres per hour.
      • Fuel Capacity of 100 litres, running at 5 knots resulted in a range of 35nm with a 25% fuel reserve.

      VERSATILITY

      After 10 years of service the original vessel has been replaced with a MODCAT 1200 Double Deck, complete with:  

      • twin toilets, seating for 40 passenger and bar. 
      • Roll-up drop-sides fitted on both top and bottom decks
      • Roll-up Canvas roof fitted

      The original MODCAT 900 Double Deck Vessel has been disassembled and transported by truck back to Entebbe, reassembled for service on Lake Victoria, all was accomplished in 10 days.


      COST BENEFITS

      • Freight and Transport cost were minimized due to the containerization plus the ability of utilizing normal road transportation to site.
      • On-site assembly was achieved in only 4 days using local manual labour.
      • Ease of disassembly, transportation, reassembly and commissioning minimized downtime for relocation of the vessel .

      Transportation to be in a 12 metre container.


      The vessel was to be equipped with the maximum number of seats possible and provide a safe platform for passengers and crew. 


      Roll-down drop-side weather protection for passenger comfort was requested and on-board male and female ablutions as well as a service counter.

      High speed was not a requirement.

        • Weather protected seating arrangements were set out with 21 passengers on the bottom deck and 20 passengers on the upper deck.

        • After sea trials a range of 30 nm at 8 Knots was established

        • The vessel was equipped as required to comply with SAMSA - Category R Safety Rules.

        • The twin toilets were fitted with a 200 lt black water tank. An electrical voiding pump was fitted for the black water removal to a shore based disposal facility. 

        LOGISTICS SOLUTION

The Container was then transported by road freight via Kampala to Mwewe Game Lodge, Queen Elizabeth Game Park. The shipping over a distance of 4300km, including custom clearance, took approximately 5 weeks.

        • Offloading was done with the aid of a forklift.
        • Electricity was supplied by a portable generator.

        SITE ASSEMBLY

        • Assembly by a Legacy Marine Technician in 4 days aided by local labour start to launch. 

        COMMISSIONING

        • Commissioning, Performance trials, Instrument calibration and crew orientation was achieved by steaming from the launch Mweye Game Lodge to Lake George and back.

        PERFORMANCE, FUEL AND RANGE

        • Speed Trails done with a full passenger load and fuel.
        • At 2400 RPM the Total fuel burn was 14 lt per hr with a Range 35nm @ 5 knots.
        • Sprint Speeds achieved at 5000 RPM the vessel achieved 12 Knots.

        COST BENEFITS

        • Freight and Transport cost were minimized due to the containerization plus the ability of utilizing normal road transportation to site.
        • On-site assembly was achieved in only 4 days using local manual labour.
